AJ Renovatum (Pty) Ltd has its roots in a legacy of craftsmanship and innovation that dates back to 1953. It all began when Anton Jansen started as an office boy at one of Southern Africa’s largest building merchants. Driven by curiosity and determination, he quickly immersed himself in every facet of the building industry. From sales and purchasing to accounting and management.

Eager to expand his horizons, Anton joined a construction firm where he honed his skills in quantity surveying, site management, and tendering. By 1969, he was ready to venture out on his own, founding a company that would soon specialize in the restoration and refurbishment of historic structures. A craft that demands both precision and passion.

Anton believed in preserving the past while training for the future. Under his guidance, many laborers became skilled craftsmen. Whether it was a dry-packed stone wall, a cow dung floor, a reed ceiling, or a weather vane atop a spire. Each project was approached with meticulous care and respect for tradition.

As demand for specialized restoration work grew, the restoration of sandstone buildings evolved into its own dedicated division, now successfully run by Anton’s son. While traditional stonemasonry remains at the heart of what we do, our team is also supported by state-of-the-art Italian machinery. Enabling us to combine artisanal detail with the efficiency required for modern architectural projects.

In 1997, Bert Griffioen joined the A J Group as a student, eventually becoming co-director of A J Renovatum. A graduate in Building Management, Bert brings a strong academic foundation and modern management perspective to the company. His leadership helps ensure that A J Renovatum continues to deliver the perfect blend of heritage craftsmanship and contemporary excellence.
